How talents work now

  • Talents start at level 10 and keep the familiar layout: milestones at 11, 21 and 31 points, plus a new milestone at 16 points.
  • Talents, Legacy talents included, are changed at a class trainer in a major city.
  • Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40.

Everything below comes from Blizzard’s deep dive, Class Deep Dives: Rogue and Warlock (opens in a new tab), rewritten in our own words and kept in its order. Blizzard says abilities and talents may still change during the beta.

Rogue

Every advantage counts: Rogues get more crowd control for groups, one-handed axes and a new Combo ability, and the three trees are reshaped around daggers, poisons and Stealth.

Baseline abilities

  • Poisons. All poisons gain more charges and can be applied alongside temporary weapon enchantments such as Weightstones and Sharpening Stones.
  • Feint. Threat reduction is doubled.
  • Sap. No longer breaks Stealth. Blizzard wants Rogues to offer crowd control to groups and raids, set up with Stealth and Distract, for packs too big to tank safely.
  • Distract. Also lowers the Stealth detection of affected enemies for 10 seconds. Enemy players will know a Rogue is nearby.
  • Expose Armor. Cuts armor by roughly the amount of five Sunder Armors at a similar level. It no longer blocks Sunder Armor, and Sunder Armor still will not overwrite it unless its own effect is weaker, so Warriors can build threat undisturbed.
  • Axes. Rogues can learn to equip one-handed axes.

Talents

Assassination

  • Improved Gouge. Moves from Combat to row 1.
  • Remorseless Attacks. Now also affects Mutilate.
  • Malice. Raises the critical strike chance of all attacks and Poisons, not only melee.
  • Murder. Now applies to Giants instead of Beasts and Dragonkin.
  • Improved Expose Armor. Redesigned: it no longer boosts Expose Armor. It lowers its Energy cost, and Expose Armor refunds Combo Points when used with 5.
  • Lethality. Also applies to Mutilate, with a slightly smaller critical damage bonus.
  • Cold Blood. Moves from the 21 point to the 16 point gold medal slot and also applies to Mutilate.
  • Improved Poisons. Gives a large chance that a triggered Poison does not use up a charge.
  • Vigor. Now a 2 point talent in row 5 instead of the 31 point gold medal talent, with the same total effect.
  • Mutilate. New 21 point gold medal talent. A 60 Energy Combo ability that strikes with both hands, and both must hold daggers. It hits harder against Poisoned targets, gives 2 Combo Points, and each hand can trigger procs.
  • Improved Kidney Shot. Its damage bonus only applies to your own attacks and Poisons.
  • Seal Fate. No longer needs Cold Blood. Mutilate triggers it once if either or both hands critically strike.
  • Venom. New 31 point gold medal talent. A 25 Energy finisher that raises Poison damage by 30% and Poison application chance by 10%, lasting longer with more Combo Points spent.

Combat

  • Improved Eviscerate. Moves from Assassination to row 1 with a bigger damage bonus.
  • Puncturing Wounds. Was Improved Backstab. A smaller Mutilate critical bonus, and Backstab can give an extra Combo Point.
  • Deflection. Doubles the Parry chance per point.
  • Precision. Raises hit chance for all spells and attacks, Poisons included.
  • Endurance. Shortens the Sprint and Evasion cooldowns by a percentage.
  • Flawless Execution. New 16 point gold medal talent: Eviscerate costs 10 less Energy.
  • Dual Wield Specialization. A smaller off-hand damage bonus.
  • Hack and Slash. New in row 5, replacing the Dagger, Mace, Sword and Fist Weapon specializations. Axes get a bonus matching swords (a chance for an extra attack), and the mace bonus now ignores some armor instead of a chance to stun.
  • Weapon Expertise. Redesigned: targets are less likely to Dodge or Parry your attacks.
  • Aggression. Also raises Backstab damage.

Removed: Dagger Specialization, Mace Specialization, Sword Specialization and Fist Weapon Specialization.

Subtlety

  • Camouflage. Moves from row 2 to row 1.
  • Master of Deception. Costs 3 points instead of 5 for the same effect, with a clearer tooltip.
  • Opportunity. Also affects Mutilate.
  • Setup. A higher chance, so 3 points guarantee it triggers.
  • Dirty Tricks. Was Improved Sap, moved from row 4 to row 2. Since Sap no longer breaks Stealth, the talent now greatly lowers the Energy cost of Sap and Blind.
  • Improved Ambush. Moves from row 3 to row 2.
  • Initiative. Triggers every time with 3 points.
  • Ghostly Strike. The damage bonus applies while a dagger is equipped, not any weapon.
  • Improved Distract. New in row 3: Distract covers a wider area and distracted enemies see you even less.
  • Heightened Senses. Moves from row 5 to row 4, with a clearer tooltip.
  • Premeditation. Moves from the 31 point to the 16 point gold medal slot and lasts 20 seconds.
  • Serrated Blades. Ignores a percentage of target armor instead of a flat amount, scaling by level.
  • Dirty Deeds. Garrote can now be used when you are not behind the target.
  • Hemorrhage. The damage bonus applies with a dagger equipped, and it also raises Rupture damage on the target for 15 seconds.
  • Quietus. New in row 6, needs Dirty Deeds. Sinister Strike, Ghostly Strike and Hemorrhage hit harder against targets under 35% health.
  • Cutthroat. New in row 6. Backstab can make your next Ambush work without Stealth.
  • Thousand Cuts. New 31 point gold medal talent. Each Rupture tick lowers the Energy cost of your next Hemorrhage or Backstab by 3, up to 5 times.

Removed: Sleight of Hand and Deadliness.

Changed in later beta builds

Blizzard changed these after the deep dive, in the 15 October build (beta development notes (opens in a new tab)):

  • Fixes. Poisons no longer wrongly fire against targets that are attacking you, Sap no longer triggers weapon procs, swapping specializations can no longer refill Energy, and Cold Blood is now used up when Mutilate crits.

Rogues stay the Stealth specialists, with Pickpocket, Distract, Sap and Garrote usable from Stealth, and they alone have Poisons. Assassination centers on daggers and finishers that buff you, Combat supports every weapon with direct damage and some cleave from Blade Flurry, and Subtlety is about combat tricks and Bleeds. Blizzard describes them as Stealth and control with the highest single target melee damage potential.

Warlock

Power at any price: Curses become Banes, Firestone and Spellstone become weapon imbues, pets scale with your stats, and each tree gets new talents and a clearer identity.

Baseline abilities

  • Banes. Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom become Banes. Only one Bane can be active per Warlock on a target, and effects that worked with Curses now work with Banes too.
  • Curse of the Elements. Applies to all magic damage.
  • Curse of Shadows. Removed.
  • Firestone and Spellstone. Now weapon imbues that stack with temporary enchantments like Wizard Oil. Firestone gives more Fire damage and critical chance, Spellstone more Shadow damage and spell haste.
  • Life Tap. Scales with Spirit, and its tooltip now shows the mana you gain from Spirit.
  • Drain Soul. Each tick has a growing chance to give a Soul Shard, rising with every miss until it is guaranteed.
  • Pets. Pets scale from their summoner's stats.

Talents

Affliction

  • Improved Life Tap. Moves from row 2 to row 1.
  • Suppression. Redesigned: up to 5% more hit chance and up to 20% less threat.
  • Improved Corruption. Also raises Corruption damage, up to 10%.
  • Malediction. New in row 2: up to 5% more periodic damage from your Warlock spells.
  • Soul Harvest. Was Improved Drain Soul.
  • Improved Drains. New in row 2: up to 20% more health drained or damage from Drain Life, Drain Soul and Wrack.
  • Improved Bane of Agony. Was Improved Curse of Agony. More damage, and now 2 points instead of 3.
  • Fel Concentration. Costs 3 points instead of 5 and also applies to Wrack.
  • Pandemic. New in row 3: up to 100% more critical damage for Corruption, Bane of Agony, Bane of Doom, Drain Soul, Drain Life, Siphon Life and Wrack.
  • Nightfall. Now also triggered by Drain Soul and Wrack.
  • Curse of Exhaustion. Moves from row 5 to row 4 as the 16 point gold medal talent. It slows movement by 30%.
  • Malevolence. New in row 4: up to 5% more critical effect chance for Shadow spells.
  • Soul Siphon. New in row 5: Drain Life, Drain Soul and Wrack deal up to 12% more for each other Affliction spell on the target, to a maximum of 36%.
  • Shadow Mastery. A smaller damage bonus.
  • Wrack. New 31 point gold medal talent. Deals Shadow damage every second and raises the damage the target takes from your other Shadow damage over time spells by 10% for 6 seconds.

Removed: Improved Curse of Weakness, Improved Drain Life, Improved Drain Mana, Improved Curse of Exhaustion, Grim Reach and Dark Pact.

Demonology

  • Improved Imp. No longer affects Blood Pact.
  • Demonic Embrace. No longer lowers Spirit.
  • Unholy Power. Moves from row 4 to row 1 with a smaller pet damage bonus.
  • Improved Health Funnel. Moves from row 2 to row 1. More health transferred, up to 100% less threat from Health Funnel, and it works whatever the demon's health.
  • Demonic Aegis. New in row 2: Demon Skin and Demon Armor up to 30% stronger.
  • Fel Vitality. New in row 2: Imp, Voidwalker, Succubus, Incubus and Felhunter get up to 15% more health and mana, and so do you.
  • Demonic Energies. New in row 2: your pet heals for up to 15% of your spell damage, and when Life Tap gives you mana your demon gains up to 100% of it.
  • Fel Domination. Becomes the 16 point gold medal talent and needs Master Summoner.
  • Master Summoner. Moves from row 4 to row 3.
  • Demonic Sacrifice. Redesigned as the 11 point gold medal talent. Sacrifice effects last 2 hours: Imp raises Shadow damage, Voidwalker restores mana, Succubus and Incubus raise Fire damage, Felhunter restores health.
  • Decimation. New in row 4. Soul Fire's cooldown is cut by up to 90%. Shadow Bolt or Searing Pain on an enemy under 35% health makes them take more damage, and your next Soul Fire within 10 seconds casts up to 40% faster and uses no Soul Shard.
  • Demonic Brand. New in row 4. Searing Pain makes less threat and brands the target, so your pet's next 2 attacks deal Fire or Shadow damage depending on the pet. Shadow damage makes high threat.
  • Soul Link. Moves from row 7 to row 5 and becomes the 21 point gold medal talent, down from 31.
  • Improved Felhunter. New in row 5: Tainted Blood, Devour Magic healing and Paranoia detection are 10% stronger, and Spell Lock's cooldown is 2 seconds shorter.
  • Demonic Knowledge. New in row 5: while a demon is out, your spell damage and your demon's rise by up to 33% of your level.
  • Master Demonologist. Redesigned. Imp raises Fire damage, Voidwalker lowers Physical damage taken, Succubus and Incubus raise Shadow damage, Felhunter lowers Magic damage taken.
  • Demonic Pact. New 31 point gold medal talent, needs Soul Link. Summoning a different pet no longer cancels Demonic Sacrifice (resummoning the sacrificed pet still does), so Demonology can use Demonic Sacrifice and Master Demonologist together for the first time.

Removed: Improved Healthstone, Fel Intellect, Fel Stamina, Improved Subjugate Demon, Improved Firestone and Improved Spellstone.

Destruction

  • Destructive Reach. Moves from row 4 to row 1 and applies to all damaging spells, not only Destruction.
  • Improved Shadow Bolt. Only applies to your own Shadow damage and no longer uses charges.
  • Bane. Moves from row 2 to row 1 and also applies to Incinerate.
  • Cataclysm. Moves from row 1 to row 2 and lowers Destruction spell mana cost by up to 10%.
  • Molten Skin. New in row 2: up to 10% less damage taken.
  • Aftermath. Redesigned: Immolate's initial damage is up to 50% higher, and Conflagrate can Daze the target (up to 100% chance), slowing movement by 50% for 5 seconds.
  • Ruin. Moves from row 5 to row 3 and costs 5 points for the same effect.
  • Agonizing Flames. Was Improved Searing Pain. 3 points, more damage for all Destruction spells and more critical chance for Searing Pain.
  • Conflagrate. Moves from row 7 to row 4 as the 16 point gold medal talent.
  • Intensity. 3 points instead of 2, and it protects all Destruction spells from losing cast time to damage, not only Rain of Fire, Hellfire and Soulfire.
  • Pyroclasm. The wording is clarified.
  • Fire and Brimstone. New in row 5, needs Conflagrate: more Conflagrate critical chance.
  • Bane of Havoc. New 21 point gold medal talent. Afflicts one target for 5 minutes, and 15% of your damage to other targets is also dealt to it. One Bane per Warlock per target.
  • Shadow and Flame. New in row 6. Conflagrate raises your Shadow damage for 20 seconds and Shadowburn raises your Fire damage for 20 seconds. Conflagrate has up to a 100% chance not to consume Immolate, and Shadowburn up to a 100% chance to refund a Soul Shard at once.
  • Incinerate. New 31 point gold medal talent, needs Bane of Havoc. Fire damage, 25% more if the target has Immolate, with a 2.5 second cast and 30 yard range.

Removed: Improved Firebolt, Improved Lash of Pain, Devastation, Improved Immolate and Emberstorm.

Changed in later beta builds

Blizzard changed these after the deep dive, in the 15 October build (beta development notes (opens in a new tab)):

  • Grim Reach. Replaces Malediction in Affliction: Affliction spells reach 10 or 20% farther.
  • Shadow Mastery. Now gives 2% per point (up to 10%) instead of 1% (up to 5%).
  • Destructive Reach. Now raises the range of Destruction spells by 10 or 20%.
  • Fixes. Soul Link can be cast on your pet again, and Summon Incubus no longer costs no shards with the Reagent Economy perk.

Warlocks have three distinct styles. Affliction is damage over time and drains, with better critical viability and self-sustain from draining health. Demonology empowers the Warlock and the pet through Demonic Brand, Demonic Knowledge and Demonic Pact, with Soul Fire doing the damage. Destruction combines Shadowburn and Conflagrate with Incinerate and Bane of Havoc. Warlocks stay physically frail and rely on their demons for protection.
