How the numbers are made

Each spell, its ranks, the level every rank is learned at, its cost and cast time are read from the beta client (the spell level table). The rule that turns a level into a share of the bonus is not in the client and Blizzard has not published it for Forever. It is the rule players documented for Classic, so treat it as community knowledge, not as a Blizzard fact:

  • A rank learned below level 20 loses 3.75% of the bonus for every level it is below 20. A level 1 rank keeps 28.75%.
  • A rank whose level plus 6 is below your level keeps only its level plus 6, divided by your level. A level 30 rank cast at level 60 keeps 60%.
  • The two multiply. A rank of level 20 or more, cast by a character no more than 6 levels above it, keeps all of the bonus.

We checked the one thing the client can tell us: the spell level of a rank. Its two level columns, the one that says when the spell is learned and the one used for the penalty, agree on all but one of the 2,486 rows that carry both, so the learn level shown is used for both. The share applies to the part of a heal or damage that comes from your spell power, not to the base numbers in the tooltip. The page does not show coefficients or the best rank for mana efficiency, because the client does not hold them. If an in-game test shows a different number in Forever, tell us through the corrections page.
